Use the penny test
The first thing to check when determining if new tires are needed is how much of the 32 inches of tread remains on the old ones. Use a penny and a quarter to find out. Place a penny upside down into the tire tread. If Lincoln’s head is always covered, you have more than the critical amount of 2 of the 32 inches needed. Try it with a quarter: If a portion of George Washington’s head is always covered by the tread, you have more than 4 inches of tread. Most states say it is illegal to drive below the two-inch mark.
Consider matching tires
It is desirable for all four tires to match. This could impact vehicle performance. Try to match up tires that have the same brand, line, size and speed rating. For those replacing one tire, how closely that new tire matches the others is something to consider.
Old tire performance
Consider if your past tire treads lasted long, handled well and rode smooth. Various category types of tires are designed to offer these specifics. If you were happy with the old ones, replace them with the same brand.
Fit tires to vehicle size
Tire size must fit vehicles. The tires must carry the entire weight of a vehicle. Heavier vehicles equal bigger tires. This is calculated to determine the proper tire diameter given the size of a vehicle. This data is usually inputted into a computer at the tire store.
Consider an upgrade
It may be smart to get bigger tires than the minimum required. Wider tires mean your vehicle will have more contact with the road-improving acceleration, stopping power and grip. When evaluating cost, one may calculate on a per/month or per/mile basis.
