Hydration is critical during hikes, specially when you go for long hikes you should absolutely bring and drink much water, even when you don't feel the need.
It doesn't matter which type of hike you are going for, what type of distance or terrain: water is fundamental.
Hydration backpacks are an underestimated resource until you buy one and understand how important and convenient they are.
Hydration packs contain a plastic bag with a drinking tube making it possible to drink without stopping and without having to take the backpack off.
Your body absorbs cool water quicker than warm water; it's important to keep water cool and you can do so easily following these basic rules:
- Blow back the water in the drinking tube or it will be warm the next time you drink.
- Fill half the water bag the night before your hike and put it in the freezer; fill the bag to the top in the morning. This method works perfectly: the big ice block will melt more slowly than ice cubes and will give you cooler water for longer time.
When you buy a hydration backpack you should consider buying one that can carry enough water and has additional pockets for food and equipment. You won't be able to stuff much equipment into your hydration pack pockets but some bars, food and small useful things like a flashlight or a pocket knife.
Camelback hydration backpacks are the most popular hydration packs, but you'll find hydration packs also from other well known brands.
