Teeth whitening has become very popular because stained or yellow teeth is considered unattractive. While great teeth can bring social success, a wrong teeth whitening process may take that smile away. When microscopic fissures and cracks form in the enamel layer due to wear and tear and food gets below the enamel to the dentin layer, teeth tend to look yellow or dull. Generally the causes of these stains are food, beverages like tea or coffee, carbonated drinks, and habits like smoking.

Teeth whitening – methods and misconceptions

Lately, numerous teeth whitening products are available over the counter. The manufacturers of these products often make tall claims, so one must be aware of the dangers of using such products. These products are neither safe nor very effective. For example, toothpastes remove stains only on the surface of the teeth and not the stains below the surface. Products that are available in shops have only 10% to 25% carbide peroxide. The whitening done by dentists is usually more effective as they use products that have up to 45% bleaching agents. These products cannot be used at home because if handled carelessly, the high percentage of bleaching agent may cause over bleaching, gum burns or teeth sensitivity. Moreover, dentists usually make new teeth trays for each patient according to the shape and size of the patient’s teeth. This is important because over the counter kits contain teeth trays that are meant to fit everyone and this leads to gum irritation when the gels leaks out of the tray.

People often have the illusion that natural remedies are safe for teeth just because they are organic. Some people use lemon or orange peels to achieve spectacular results. This is dangerous because critic acid eats into the enamel of the teeth. Without the enamel, teeth become susceptible to decay. Some people feel that just one teeth whitening session results in permanently white teeth. This is not true; teeth must be kept white with regular touch ups. People also think that teeth are permanently damaged if they are whitened. This is a possible outcome only if one keeps the bleaching agent on the teeth for too long. It is a common notion that tooth sensitivity is an inevitable and permanent result of teeth whitening. However, all these side effects can be avoided by going to an expert for consultation.

Thus, teeth whitening is both effective and safe only when one goes to a trained and experienced dentist.
