How to Build Trust in a Relationship
Author: Adrienne Smith With any relationship, new or old, trust is a key ingredient for a long lasting partnership. Without trust, your relationship will either fall by the wayside or die a slow death. Trust is definitely the glue that holds couples together. It will help you through any crisis or when doubts may arise. Here are a few ways that can help you build trust in a relationship.
Tell the truth:
Always tell your partner the truth unless you are planning a surprise party for them. Those are the only excuses for even the smallest of lies. I'm sure we are all aware that when you aren't truthful with your partner, this can put a huge strain on your relationship. All lies, no matter the size, find a way to come to the surface. This is not the way to build trust in your relationship.
Always be reliable:
When you say you are going to do something, do it. It's important that your partner knows you are someone they can count on. If you say you will be there at 8:00 to pick them up, be there at 8:00. If you run into a problem, call them to let them know why. If you say you will take out the trash each morning, take out the trash. Don't commit to things you can't follow through with.
Be open and honest:
Don't be afraid to tell your partner how you feel or what you need from them. Always trying to please the other person is nice in the beginning but then it's expected as the relationship progresses. Be honest with yourself as well as your partner. If you don't want to do a particular thing with them, tell them so and tell them why. Don't always try to be the people pleaser. It's not healthy.
Boundaries:
When boundaries aren't set and one or the other partner tends to have a jealous streak, this can be dangerous territory. Sit down with your partner and discuss what bothers you. If your partner's ex is always calling wanting to go to lunch, let them know that's not okay with you. Stop flirting with co-workers and keep it professional. Make sure your partner knows that they are your number one priority and they take precedence over all others.
Communication:
Be open to sitting down and discussing whatever is on your mind. Some people don't like to share their feelings or talk about problems but holding it all inside only leads to outburst, arguments and feelings getting hurt. Be open to communicate with your partner and share whatever feelings you are having. This is the best way to build trust in a relationship knowing that you two can talk about anything.
Building trust in any relationship is no easy task. It takes time to get to know the other person and be able to rely on them. But once you start working through all the different obstacles that may stand in your way, you will come out much better for it on the other side. When you build the trust between you two then you are on the road to building a lasting relationship.
