Getting Your Child to Nap Longer
Author: Lauren Dzuris We all want to make sure our babies get all the sleep they need to grow up big and strong. Although, that may be more difficult than we thought. Some babies are just fussier than others, and find it hard to sleep for longer periods of time. If this sounds like your baby, you're not alone. Instead of getting upset about this, find ways to fix this problem. If you want your baby to sleep longer, and have a successful nap, consider a few of these ideas!
Fewer - First, you may want to consider letting your baby nap less. If you have less naps each day you will find that your little one will be more tired, and when they go to take a nap, they will nap for longer because there are fewer. Taking a way a nap is definitely a great option if you're looking to make your little one sleep for longer periods of time.
Sleeping Patterns - Do they have a certain sleeping pattern? If so, try to adjust to it. If you find they take 4 naps throughout the day, and they only last for a half an hour or a little more each, that's a problem. Try to cut it to 2 or 3 naps for longer periods of time. This will be easier on the both of you. Not to mention, you're baby will be a lot less fussy.
Surroundings - You also want to take a look at your baby's surroundings. Make sure their room is nice and quiet, and there are no distractions. Try to also keep the activity in the house lower than when they are awake. Little things like a dog barking, the phone ringing, and a loud TV are things that will easily wake up your baby. Also, make sure your baby isn't too hot or too cold. When we go to sleep, those are two things we hate, and make sleeping much more difficult.
Routine - Try to create a routine for your baby if you haven't already. Creating a routine will help them do things at the same time each day. For example, they take a nap, have a bottle, play, and then take another nap. Try to create a routine, and stick to the same times for each day. This will help them adjust to doing certain things at certain times, especially sleeping. If they get tired at the same time each day, they will know they will need a nap soon.
Having your baby sleep for longer times can be a little bit difficult in the beginning. They want what they want, and when they want it. If they don't get it, they will have a fit and cry. We've all been there! Although, try to understand your baby, and get them on a nice schedule that is both good, and easy for the two of you. If you can do this, and consider these tips above, your baby will be napping for longer periods of time in no time!
