They are a great time to get together with your friends and other family members to have a celebration for a new baby, regardless of whether it is before of after the birth. If we look at what tradition has to say about this the answer is easy. It has always been that a baby shower was appropriate for the first child only. But that is not always the case today. Over the past 10-20 years this thinking has changed and baby showers have been held for all new babies.
There are a few good reasons behind this thinking that make sense. First, why not celebrate every new child instead of only the first? The best tip here is to be sure that all guests being invited are on board with the idea. In most cases this is never a problem, but some may hold true to traditional beliefs.
Another reason for holding an additional shower is that the new mother may need a lot of the extras for her child. What if her second child is a boy and her first one was a girl? She will not be able to use the same clothes and many other items as she could if they were the same sex. Even if they are of the same sex you could use a shower to give items such as diapers, clothes, and other smaller items.
Putting the gifts aside, a baby shower is still a time for friends and family to come together and celebrate the new baby, regardless of tradition.
